Augusta Neighborhoods, Locations and Districts

Augusta is the very picture of a quaint, old fashioned Southern town, with many charming districts and neighborhoods. Stately antebellum homes, tree-lined avenues and shady pathways along the rivers characterize this historic and charming city. The neighborhoods of Augusta and the surrounding communities each have their own unique atmosphere, but the world-famous southern dignity and hospitality pervade them all.

Downtown is a bustling commercial district, while across the Savannah River in South Carolina lies North Augusta, a sleepy bedroom community. Just up the hill from the city's downtown district you will find Summerville, the one-time summer home of the elite, now a historic district. Artist's Row is a unique area with a diverse array of galleries, bistros and cafés.



Artist's Row

Broad Street in downtown is known as Artist's Row and is home to a growing number of art galleries, boutiques and one-of-a-kind bistros and cafés. Artist's Row is linked to the Riverwalk by Augusta Common, the city's newest park and festival space.

Downtown District

The heart of Augusta, Richmond County is undoubtedly the bustling downtown district. This is the location of not only much of the city's accommodation, but also the majority of its shops and restaurants. Downtown is the city's cultural center as well, hosting art walks and regular family art festivals.

North Augusta

Just across the Savannah River in South Carolina lies the sleepy bedroom community of North Augusta. Although on the opposite side of the state line, this is still very much a part of the Augusta, Richmond County, community. This neighborhood is a growing community, with the construction of a waterfront commercial district nearly complete. An 18-mile / 29-km jogging and cycling path meandering through the town, the Greenway is one of the main attractions of this quaint community.

Riverwalk District

The Riverwalk is amongst the loveliest and most attractive areas of Augusta. This two-tiered park lies on the banks of the Savannah River and features picnic areas, lush gardens and numerous tourist attractions. Highlights along the Riverwalk include art, science and history museums, as well as an open-air amphitheater.

Summerville

Once a separate community where wealthy and powerful residents owned summer homes, Summerville is now a part of Augusta. The restored pre-Civil War era homes of this area date as far back as the 18th century and many were once home to important historical figures. The Summerville Cemetery is the final resting place of many Civil War heroes and prominent Georgia citizens.
