Museums in Augusta are worthy of a visit and many celebrate the area's heritage, with a number being situated in historic buildings, in the heart of the downtown district. The popular Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History offers an array of exhibits about the rich history of African-Americans in Augusta.

The city also features a selection of art galleries, the most notable of which is the Morris Museum of Art, dedicated to preserving and promoting the art and artists of the South. The striking red-brick Cotton Exchange building is one of the area's most recognizable landmarks and was an major part of the cotton industry in the late 19th century. Now housing a Welcome Center for visitors, a convention center and small museum, the Cotton Exchange is an important part of Augusta history.

Laurel and Hardy Museum

Located roughly 15 miles / 24 km from Augusta and within the nearby town of Harlem, this whimsical museum is dedicated to two classic American comedians, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. This offbeat, fun museum has a large collection of memorabilia from the lives and careers of the world-famous comic duo.

Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History

This small house museum was once the home of famed black educator Lucy Craft Laney, who founded the first black kindergarten in Augusta, as well as the first black nursing school and the Haines Normal Industrial Institute. It is the only black history museum in the Central Savannah River Area. Exhibits include the Ebony Legacy Exhibition, a collection of photographs and documents highlighting the contributions made by African Americans with a local connection.

Morris Museum of Art

Founded by William South Morris III, chairman and CEO of Morris Communications Corporation, in memory of his parents, the Morris Museum of Art is dedicated to preserving the cultural legacy of Southern art and artists. The facility is housed in a renovated office space right on Augusta's Riverwalk and its exhibits present a broad based survey of the artistic legacy of the South. From pre-Civil War to Southern Impressionism and contemporary works, the Morris Museum's many fixed exhibits provide an excellent cross-section of the art of 'Dixieland'. The gallery also regularly features special exhibitions, such as the Wyeth Family Exhibition and the Art of Zelda Fitzgerald.
